Long recognized as an insurance and agricultural hub, Des Moines has been quietly reinventing itself in recent years as a Midwestern mecca for the performing arts, dining, entertainment and other cultural attractions.

Des Moines was also the home of Allied Insurance which, upon becoming part of the Nationwide family, introduced our independent agency system. Today, Nationwide employs more than 4,000 associates in Des Moines, in exciting career fields such as customer service, finance, marketing, IT, HR and legal.

Community involvement

Nationwide is a leading contributor to the Des Moines community and has partnerships with several local organizations. Last year, the company, its associates and the Nationwide Foundation invested more than $ 3 million to a number of local charities including:

  • Central Iowa Shelter and Services
  • Children and Families of Iowa
  • Food Bank of Iowa – ($1.5 million grant for capital improvements to the food bank's distribution center)
  • Orchard Place
  • Polk County Housing and Trust Fund
  • Science Center of Iowa
  • Youth Emergency Services and Shelters

In addition, our Des Moines associates contributed $ 853,000 through our annual United Way Campaign, raised 136,920 meals for the Food Bank of Iowa, volunteered more than 16,000 hours in the community and gave 2,079 units of blood last year. And, 27 of our leaders served on local nonprofit boards.
