Edwards wins at home by more than six seconds
Carl Edwards
performed his customary backflip flawlessly Saturday night after a
decisive win in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Gateway
International Raceway in Madison, Ill.
Edwards, 28, savored his 15th career victory and second of this season after driving away from rookie sensation Joey Logano. The 18-year-old Logano led twice for a total of 42 laps in the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250, but Edwards finished ahead by 6.877 seconds.
“To win it again, man it feels cool,” said Edwards, a Columbia, Mo. native who was victorious at the Gateway oval in 2006. “It feels just as good as it did the time before.” Here what else Edwards had to say in the post-race interview.
For Logano, it was his third top five and fourth top-10 finish in just five starts in the Nationwide Series.
“I never gave up, but he had such a big lead that even if I was a half-second quicker at the end I was never going to get there,” said Logano, who finished second in his previous race at the Milwaukee Mile in June.
Finishing third behind Logano was Jason Keller, followed by Jason Leffler and Brad Keselowski. Rounding out the top 10 were rookie Landon Cassill, James Buescher, Clint Bowyer, David Stremme and David Ragan.
Edwards is now third in the points standings with 2,906, trailing Clint Bowyer by 170. Keselowski is second, with 2,937 points.
ESPN will provide live coverage of the next Nationwide Series event - the July 25 Kroger 200 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, starting at 7:30 p.m.
