Learn about the Nationwide and United Way partnership
When I first got involved with the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers, a United Way Agency, I had no idea how widespread the issue of homelessness was for kids in Central Iowa.
You quickly see these youth have the same hopes and dreams as anyone else; they just need help in getting there.
First priorities of Iowa Homeless Youth Centers are a safe place to live, education and employment, but it's so much more.
We take kids to community events to give them positive community and social interaction. We cook with kids to teach them life skills.
We also hold events like Reggie's Sleep Out, a community event where we sleep outside in the cold fall weather to simulate a homeless experience.
Working for a company like Nationwide, which not only supports associates having a personal passion, but also encourages it, makes me very proud.
Receiving Nationwide's Volunteer of the Year award is a great example. Not only does Nationwide recognize associates doing great work in the community, but also it rewards them by donating to the organization they are involved with through volunteer grants.
And because Iowa Homeless Youth Center is a United Way Agency, the Nationwide Insurance Foundation matches my United Way donation dollar for dollar.
Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.
