Highlights of our Progress

It all began in 1909
Farm leaders and grain elevator operators in Aurelia, Iowa, create the Farmers Cooperative Elevator Mutual Insurance Association (now Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance Company).

1923
Corporate office moves to Fort Dodge, Iowa.

1945
Company name changes to Farmers Elevator Mutual Insurance Company (FEMIC).

1946
Corporate office moves to 1101 Walnut Street, Des Moines, Iowa (just one block south of our current Des Moines headquarters location).

1967
Farmland Industries, then the nation’s largest farm supply cooperative, acquires Farmers Elevator Mutual Insurance Company (FEMIC).

1968
The Safety and Engineering and Fire Services Departments combine to form the Loss Prevention Department, now the Risk Management Services Department.

1973
Farmland Insurance Company (a property and casualty stock company) is formed.

1982
Farmland Insurance Companies are acquired by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and becomes Nationwide Agribusiness. Since Nationwide began as part of the Ohio Farm Bureau, both companies shared common values and an agricultural focus.

1999
Nationwide Agribusiness begins writing farm business in Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Today, we write farm in 46 states.

2003
The corporate office moves to its current home at 1100 Locust Street, Des Moines, Iowa.

2004
The company brand name officially changes to Nationwide Agribusiness; both Farmland Mutual Insurance and Nationwide Agribusiness remain known by this brand name today.

2004-present
We continue to expand our reach into diverse markets in the food, fuel and fiber chain. We broadened our focus to meet each industry’s unique needs by hiring more in-house specialists, including industrial hygienists, nurses, fleet specialists and agronomists.
