Catastrophes

When a Disaster Strikes

Disasters can often be scary for everyone involved. Knowing what happens during a disaster can help you and your family prepare.

Children can often feel frightened during a catastrophe especially if they must leave their home. Take time to sit down with your children and discuss what would happen during a disaster.

  • Talk about your disaster escape routes
  • Who to call if they get separated from you
  • What happens if a disaster occurs while they're at school or at the babysitters
  • Where they might go during a disaster
  • General disaster safety tips
  • How they can help you to protect yourselves and your property

Remind them:

  • It's OK to feel scared and to cry during a disaster. It'll be over soon and things can return to normal.
  • If they feel scared or confused, they should find you or another adult and ask questions.
  • Sometimes, it can help to draw pictures or write stories about their experiences.

By helping children know what to expect during a disaster, and what they can do to help, they will be better prepared if and when storms begin.
