Michael W. Mahaffey
Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer, Nationwide
Michael W. Mahaffey is Senior Vice President, Chief Risk Officer at Nationwide and leads the company's Enterprise Risk and Capital Management function. He was elected to this position in 2008 after joining Nationwide in 2005. As CRO, Mike is responsible for overseeing the company's approach to identifying, assessing, aggregating, and managing its risk profile, including Investment Risk Management, Enterprise Risk and Capital Modeling, Corporate Risk Management and Reinsurance, Claims Quality Assurance and Risk and Capital Optimization. He is currently Chair of Nationwide's Enterprise Risk Council and a member of the Executive Leadership Team. Additionally, Mike serves on numerous other committees which govern the company's approach to financial, investment, product, operational, and strategic risks.
Prior to joining Nationwide, Mike was a member of Deloitte Consulting's Strategy and Operations practice working with Fortune 500 clients in the financial services, energy, and consumer business sectors. His practice areas included Finance, Strategy, and Operations Improvement, Risk and Capital Management, and Merger and Acquisition Strategy. Prior to Deloitte, Mike held several positions in corporate finance and financial systems at Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher, a leading global law firm based in Los Angeles.
Mike holds a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pepperdine University. Mike is a frequent speaker at professional conferences on the topics of risk and capital management, and since 2006 has been an Adjunct Professor teaching Applied Enterprise Risk Management at the Fisher Graduate School of Business at the Ohio State University. Mike is also a founding member and Chair of the North American Chief Risk Officer Council.
