COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mark Thresher, president and COO of Nationwide Financial (NYSE: NFS), has been named a delegate to the third National Summit on Retirement Savings, to be held March 1-2 in Washington, D.C. The summit, which is mandated by the Savings are Vital to Everyone’s Retirement (SAVER) Act of 1997, will be convened by President Bush and co-hosted by Congressional leaders.
The 2006 Summit will focus on the development of action plans to help at-risk groups plan and save for a financially secure retirement. Thresher will address issues facing workers nearing retirement.
The summit will give Thresher the opportunity to engage in policy discussions on issues he finds important to retirement security, including longevity risk, pension reform and tax policy.
“The promise of lifelong retirement income made to workers at the start of their careers has been broken for many Americans,” said Thresher. “As a society, we need to find ways to help insure that retirees replace the guarantees that were once offered by company defined benefit plans. Solutions include increased financial literacy and public policy that encourages protection against the financial risks of retirement.”
As president of one of the nation’s leading providers of 401(k) plans, Thresher will offer insight into how employers and legislators can help Americans generate retirement income.
“We’re seeing how recent legislation to encourage automatic 401(k) enrollments increases participation in retirement savings,” Thresher said. “While we need to continue to encourage retirement savings, we also need to insure that Americans are able to make that savings last for the duration of their retirement.”
Delegates for the 2006 National Summit on Retirement Savings represent a cross-section of leaders from Congress and the retirement policy community, including thought leaders from academia, think tanks and the financial services industry.
