Questions to Ask Your Provider

We want you to make the best decision for you and your employees, so here are some questions you can ask to help you evaluate all potential retirement plan providers based on the same criteria.

Plan design and administration

  • Is your plan administration handled by a third-party administrator or done "in-house?" Does your platform offer a choice?
  • Describe your ability to help me design the best plan type to meet my company's needs, as well as my employees' needs?
  • Can your plan administrators support cross-tested and new comparability plan design?

Investment options

  • Do you offer investment choices that are retail mutual funds, or annuity subaccounts?
  • Does your product offer multiple fund families? If so, please provide a sampling.
  • Do you require that a certain number of proprietary funds be included in the designated fund lineup?
  • Are there additional fees for using non-proprietary funds?
  • Does your product offer lifestyle or target maturity funds?
  • How can you assist me in selecting investments for a core lineup?

Participant investment styles

  • Do participants have the option to have their accounts managed by a professional investment advisor money manager if desired?
  • Do my employees have the option to choose funds outside of the designated lineup? If so, is there an expense for this feature?
  • Does your product offer stocks, bonds or employer stock options? If so, what are the additional costs?

Fiduciary responsibility

  • How many plans does your company administer?
  • Where does your company rank in assets under management?
  • How can you offer me assistance with 404(c) compliance concerns?
  • What processes and tools do you have in place to assist me with my fiduciary responsibilities as a trustee of the plan?
  • Can you provide a custom Investment Policy Statement for my company's plan?
  • Do you have a process to assist in the monitoring of plan investments?

Education

  • Do you have a dedicated specialist to assist with enrollment and ongoing education? How often can we expect their services?
  • Can you provide me with a sample of your enrollment materials?
  • What educational tools do you provide to help my employees make the best investment decisions for themselves?
  • Can you outline your service plan and commitment to assisting us with participant education?

Fees

  • What fees are associated with your product?
    • Wrap fees?
    • Asset management charges?
    • Administration fees? Per-head, base, start-up costs?
    • Fund expenses?
    • Trustee/Custodial services?
  • Are investment returns quoted net of fees, or gross? Ask to see a complete list of available investment returns and fund expenses.
