Learn about your coverage options so you can choose the Rhode Island auto insurance that’s right for your needs, goals and budget.

Rhode Island car insurance coverage you must have

Liability coverage

There are two types of liability coverage available:

  • Property damage safeguards your assets if you are found legally responsible for a covered accident. It covers certain damage you may cause to the property or vehicle of another party.
  • Bodily injury safeguards your assets if you’re found legally responsible for a covered accident, including certain expenses associated with bodily harm sustained by the other parties.

The minimum amount of Rhode Island auto insurance coverage is $25,000/$50,000/$25,000. In the event of a covered accident, your limits for bodily injury are $25,000 per person, with a total maximum of $50,000 per incident. It also covers up to $25,000 for damage to another person’s property.

Liability coverage also provides for your legal defense if a lawsuit is brought against you as a result of a covered accident.

Rhode Island car insurance coverage that’s smart to have

Though full coverage auto insurance in Rhode Island is not mandatory, you may want to consider adding the following coverages to your policy. We offer several affordable options, like comprehensive coverage, to give you peace of mind both on and off the road.

  • Comprehensive − Covers damage to your vehicle not caused by collision or upset. Examples include damage or loss resulting from contact with animals, theft, fire, vandalism, and glass breakage along with other non-collision related accidents (subject to deductible).
  • Collision − Covers damage to your vehicle resulting from a collision with another vehicle or object (subject to deductible).
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist − Protects you in the event of an accident where the other party is at fault and either doesn’t carry insurance or is underinsured. This coverage is mandatory when your bodily injury and property damage rates are higher than the state minimum.
    • Property damage helps pay for property damage to your vehicle that you are legally entitled to from another driver who is not insured or underinsured (subject to deductible). Property damage coverage is mandatory on policies that don’t have collision coverage unless you reject it in writing.
    • Bodily injury helps pay for damages due to bodily injury that you and other passengers of your vehicle are legally entitled to from another driver who is not insured or is underinsured.
  • Medical payments − Covers reasonable medical expenses and essential services for you and others in the event of an accident, regardless of who is at fault. In your policy this may be referred to as Medical Expenses or Medical Benefits.
