Three Great International Motorcycle Adventure Trips
Ever thought of taking a vacation road trip on two wheels instead of four?
Exploring adventurous destinations by motorcycle is a unique way to satisfy your wanderlust. Along the way, you’ll experience new cultures, interesting wildlife and panoramic landscapes from a different – and breezy – perspective.
Where would you go? We found three motorcycle adventure vacations that may pique your interest:
Western U.S. – Beartooth Pass
This classic ride – which provides a history lesson on the American Wild West – begins in Red Lodge, Mo., and snakes through the striking natural terrain of the West until you drop your kickstand in Cody, Wyo.
You’ll negotiate hairpin switchbacks and see some of America’s most spectacular and breathtaking landscapes within 3,000 square miles of steep, glacier-carved mountains and gentle tundra, including:
- Beartooth, Silver Run and Hell Roaring plateaus
- Beartooth Mountains, which is part of Wyoming’s Big Sky Country and ascends almost 11,000 feet
As you descend, nearly a thousand dazzling lakes and a vast network of hiking trails and campgrounds dot the countryside – and invite you in for a visit.
South America – Chile and Argentina
If a romantic motorcycle adventure reminiscent of The Motorcycle Diaries is playing on your mind, chart your motorcycle trip through Chile and Argentina. You’ll traverse some of the world’s most exotic terrain, skirting roads adjacent to the massive Andes Mountains.
Start your trip with a proper celebration in vibrant Santiago, then head out the next day like the locals do – with a bit of the strong, energizing yerba maté tea. Veer south and spend the day kayaking the fjords of the Chilean Patagonia.
Before hiking the majestic forests, take a rest in a quaint mountain town, or enjoy a soak in one of the many mineral-rich hot springs.
Refreshed, climb back aboard and continue south toward Tierra del Fuego, leisurely weaving through Argentina. Stop to gaze at countryside guanacos (relatives to the llama), then ascend the mighty Torres del Paine Mountain and watch the grand condors glide along the Andean slopes. From there, cruise through more magnificent mountainside territory until you reach the massive Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the world’s largest.
Australia’s East Coast
Who embraces outdoor adventure better than the Aussies?
This motorcycle adventure begins with the brilliant coastal views along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road – Australia’s most stunning beachside road – and ends with the excitement of the famous Gold Coast.
As you ride down the winding seaside drive, you’ll hug the curves of the Pacific Ocean and feel the sea spray. Head inland and northeast to find Australia’s infamous natural wonders – from mountains and rainforests, to deserts and beaches.
You may end your motorcycle adventure in Gold Coast City, just south of Brisbane, where you can indulge in fine cuisine and exciting nightlife. But if you thirst for more adventure, climb back on and head north to soak up the many and varied tourist attractions surrounding the Great Barrier Reef, including surfing, scuba diving, fishing and just relaxing.
Guided tour or set your own pace?
Traveling by motorcycle lets you decide; it all depends on your budget, time restraints and how much planning you want to put into your trip.
Chart your own motorcycle adventure tour or hire a tour company to map a route and serve as a guide.
Get the right motorcycle insurance and other tips
If you ship your motorcycle overseas, plan well in advance and know that costs can be steep.
- Review your motorcycle insurance to be sure you have enough coverage
- Obtain the required visas or driving permits for the country you’ll visit
- Have your regular mechanic show you how to change a flat and perform minor repairs on the road
