Nationwide Bank® Security Measures
Nationwide Bank® uses both physical and technical safeguards to ensure that your confidential transactions and personal information remain safe, secure and private. We restrict access to your information to those who need it to perform their jobs. Third-party business partners are bound by law to use the information only for our purposes. They may not disclose it or use it in any other way. We also comply with all data security laws.
Password-controlled entry (online banking)
Ultimately, you're responsible for protecting the integrity and security of your own password. In the case of a lost or forgotten password, we will generate a new password for your account. Each time you login to our online banking, your identity is confirmed by a series of authentication steps.
You'll be prompted for your online banking username. Enter your username and click next.
We'll display your SafeKey image and prompt you for your password. Recognition of your SafeKey image confirms that you're on our site and not on an unauthorized site. You shouldn't enter your password if you don't recognize your SafeKey image.
If you haven't registered your computer with us, we'll also ask you to answer a secret question that you have shared with us.
If your session is left idle for a period of time, you'll be logged out automatically. If unsuccessful login is attempted more than three times, your internet account will be locked for a period of time.
SafeKeys
What is SafeKeys?
SafeKeys provides you added safety by helping ensure that only you
can access your bank account. SafeKeys is a picture and phrase that is a
shared secret between you and Nationwide Bank. Your SafeKeys will be
presented to you each time you logon to Nationwide Bank so you can be
confident that you are at the legitimate Nationwide Bank web site, not an
imposter site.
Why do I need SafeKeys?
SafeKeys is an enhanced security feature that helps protect you
while you access your on-line account. On the Internet today, fraudsters
attempt to steal your identity by impersonating the web sites you trust.
Nationwide Bank is committed to proactively protecting you, our customer,
against such attacks. Your SafeKeys helps us to do this.
How do SafeKeys work?
When you visit your branch office, you know our faces and we know
yours. SafeKeys does the same thing over the Internet. It is a new method
to identify us to you and you to us. When you login for the first time
following the implementation of this security feature, you will select
your SafeKeys which will consist of a secret image and phrase known only
to you. Whenever you log-in we will show you this picture and phrase so
you can rest assured that you are accessing the real Nationwide Bank site
and not an imposter site.
You will also be able to register the computer(s) or device(s) that you
use to access the web site. This information will be remembered by
assigning a unique identifier to each computer you use to access our web
site. Should you need to log-in from a different computer, such as an
Internet café, additional steps will be taken to verify your identity,
such as ask you to provide the answer to a secret question which only you
would know.
How are SafeKeys more secure?
SafeKeys protect you from accidentally revealing your username and
password to a fake site. In addition, if someone does somehow get your
username and password, they will still not be able to access your account
because they are not at your registered computer(s).
What keeps somebody from stealing my SafeKeys?
Your SafeKeys image and phrase will only be shown to you if you
log-in from your registered computer(s), or after you have answered a
secret question. Therefore, it is not possible for an unauthorized person
to get access to your picture.
Firewalls
Nationwide utilizes multiple layers of firewalls to protect its applications and servers from unwanted intrusion.
SSL
Nationwide also uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a commonly used protocol for managing the security of a message transmission on the Internet. This keeps all information confidential when it is sent between our website and your computer.
Additional Security Measures
As a condition of employment, all Nationwide employees have to sign confidentiality agreements and receive training in the handling of customer information. Our security team also performs daily monitoring of our computer systems, which target security violations and intrusion detection.
Our internal audit department also performs regular IT audits of the computing environment. In addition, Nationwide Bank and its affiliated companies are regularly audited by third parties to ensure proper control measures are in place and working as expected.
