What you need before you apply for a used auto loan

Nationwide Bank has a quick and secure used car loan application so you can get the auto loan you need to buy the used car you want. Before beginning your application, gather this basic information about yourself and the car you want to buy. If you don’t have a car picked out yet, that’s OK – you can still apply to be preapproved for a loan. You must be 18 years or older to apply for a used car loan.

One form of government issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID
Previous residence information if you’ve been in your current home less than two years
Previous employer information if you’ve been with your current employer less than two years

The amount you would like to borrow
Amount of your down payment, if applicable
Your annual income (salary, bonuses, retirement income, etc.)
Other income information (alimony, child support, separate maintenance) if you wish to have it considered as a basis for repaying your loan

Vehicle purchase price, year, make, model and mileage
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Vehicle trade-in value, year, make and model
Amount of down payment, if applicable

If you are applying for this used car loan with another person, and this person agrees to apply jointly, you will need to have his or her ID, residence, job and income information, too.

Q. Do I have to buy a used car from a dealership to get a loan from Nationwide Bank?
A. With a loan from Nationwide Bank, you can purchase a car from a dealer or a private party. That includes online sites such as eBay and Craigslist, used car lots and family or friends.

Q. Is high mileage a factor in my used car loan?
A. While we don’t have set mileage limits, the mileage will impact the value of your used car. In turn, the value of the car will impact how much you can borrow for your used car loan.

Q. Does it make sense for me to buy a car with my home equity line of credit instead of a used car loan?
A. That depends on your situation. With a used auto loan, you’ll get a fixed interest rate and set term. With a home equity line of credit, you may have more flexibility, and you may be able to deduct the loan interest from your taxable income (please consult a tax advisor regarding the deductibility of interest).

Q. After I am approved, how quickly can I get a check?
A. After you fill out the loan application online and you are approved, we’ll send you loan documents to read, sign and return. Once we receive your signed documents, you’ll get a check in two business days.

Q. Do you charge a different rate for used car loans?
A. No, Nationwide Bank offers the same low rate for car loans, whether they’re new, used or refinanced.
