How to apply for an online checking account

You must be 18 years or older to open an E-Checking account.

Nationwide Bank has a quick and secure online application to make it easy to open a checking account online. Before beginning your application, gather this basic information about yourself.

  • Previous address if you've been at your current home less than 2 years

  • Routing and account number of the bank you are using to fund your account

Be sure to sign up for direct deposit so you can avoid monthly service fees.

If you are opening a checking account with another person, you will need to have that person’s ID and residence information, too.

You can use our online application to open an individual or joint account with Right of Survivorship and with up to three co-signers. You'll need to fund your account with an initial deposit that you can electronically transfer from another personal bank account or send by check.

How do I avoid the monthly service fee?

There are two ways to avoid the monthly service fee:

  1. Sign up for at least 1 direct deposit each month and make debit card purchases 8 times each month or
  2. Keep a combined total of $10,000 or more in your Nationwide Bank deposit accounts, which includes checking, savings or money market accounts

What ATMs can I use with my account?

Your Nationwide Bank ATM/debit card gives you access to more than 77,000 surcharge-free ATMs within the Allpoint, PNC Bank, Alliance One and MoneyPass ATM networks.2 Find an ATM near you.

Can I get overdraft protection for this checking account?

Yes, you can use one or more linked savings accounts to cover overdrafts on your E-Checking account.

Are checks included with the account?

No, but checks can be ordered separately at a cost.

Do any of your accounts include a free debit card?

Do any of your accounts have funds transfer?

Can I use my debit card while traveling abroad?

Please notify Nationwide Bank before you travel abroad to temporarily authorize your card where allowed by law. (Certain restrictions may apply.) To combat an increase in international counterfeit credit cards, Nationwide Bank has blocked use of our checking Visa debit card and ATM cards in Cuba, Iran, Myanmar and Sudan.

My debit card is getting ready to expire. Is it still valid? When will I receive a new one?

Your card is valid through the end of the expiration month listed on the card. For example, a card that expires June 2020 is valid through June 30, 2020. Your new card will be sent to you within the last two weeks of the expiration month.

Check 21
To make check processing more efficient, a federal law commonly known as Check 21 was enacted in 2004 that permits banks to process checks electronically. With Check 21, a digital image of the original check is produced and the image is routed through the check clearing system. That digital image – or a printed copy of that digital image – is called a substitute check, which is considered a legal copy of the original check and may be used as proof of payment.
