Auto Vandalism Insurance Claims

If your car has been vandalized
At the scene
- Call police at a non-emergency number to report the incident.
- Although most car vandalism is random, if you believe yours is a result of harassment or revenge, report that to police.
- If there are witnesses, collect their contact information.
- Call our On Your Side® Claims Service at 1-800-421-3535 and have available:
- The date and time of the incident
- Where the damage is on your car
- Where it was parked
- The police report number
- A good phone number where you can be reached
- Contact information for the lender or car leasing company, if needed
Secure your car and its contents
- Make sure that your car is safe to drive. If your car is towed, remove your registration, insurance card, credit cards and personal belongings. Also, take your house or office keys off of your key ring or fob.
- Don't attempt to clean up or repair any damage until an adjuster has made a full assessment (in the case of rain, take necessary measures to keep your interior dry).
- After the adjuster has made an assessment, cover any broken windows, open sunroof, or slashed convertible top to prevent rain damage. Any water damage that may result after the vandalism happened may not be covered.
- Save receipts for any materials you buy to protect your car for possible reimbursement.
Document the damage
- If the police don't come to the scene, take pictures of the damage from every angle to help document your claim.
- Make an inventory of any items that were stolen or damaged and locate receipts if possible.
- It also is helpful if you have fairly current pictures of your car before the vandalism, in case there's any question of when the damage happened.

You will be assigned a Nationwide claims representative who will contact you to gather all essential information and to schedule an inspection of your car.
Your claims representative will review your insurance policy, explain what’s covered and how your deductible may come into play. The representative will walk you through the claim process and answer any questions related to your claim.
Check your policy to see if you’re eligible for reimbursement of a rental car or public transportation while your vehicle is being repaired.
Replacing your stolen belongings
While comprehensive insurance may cover repairs to your car, homeowners or renters insurance may cover certain items stolen from your car. To pursue possible coverage for items stolen from your vehicle, you may need to file a second separate claim under your homeowners or renters insurance policy.

Settling your claim
Once repairs are completed, we settle your claim and send you or the repair shop final payment, minus any deductible amount you’re responsible for.
If the vandalism is so extensive that the vehicle is determined to be total loss, your claims representative will work closely with you throughout the process. We work with a third party to determine the actual case value of your vehicle, and you will receive a vehicle valuation report.

Safeguard your car from vandals
- Park it inside. Keeping your vehicle in a locked garage works as a good deterrent to car vandalism because most vandals are looking for an easy and convenient target – usually parked on the street or in a lot.
- Look for lights. If you have to park outside at night, look for an unobstructed, well-lit place. If you’re on the street, park under a street lamp. If you are parking in a driveway, install motion-sensor lights to draw attention to anyone that comes near your vehicle.
- Install a car alarm. Consider installing a quality motion-activated car alarm. Although many people may simply ignore them going off, a vandal is not likely to hang around a blaring alarm very long. Even a security system decal on your window may deter a vandal.
- Hide your valuables. Don't leave anything of value in plain sight. Lock valuables in your trunk or hide them under a seat. Or, take them with you. Don't tempt a thief into a smash and grab.
