Pandemic Flu
Recently, avian flu has been a threat to many nations. While some countries are recovering from it, others are preparing. Though avian flu is the name this time, a pandemic flu can occur at any time, and being prepared can help regardless of who is spreading the disease.
Plan ahead
No one can tell when the next influenza pandemic will occur or how severe it'll be. The best precaution to the pandemic flu is to be ready if an attack occurs. By knowing what actions to take now, you can lessen the chance of exposing your family to the newest pandemic.
-
Store a two week supply of food and water in your home
-
Have nonprescription drugs on hand such as pain relievers, stomach
remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes and
vitamins
-
Talk with family members about how they'd be cared for if they got
sick
-
Limit the spread of germs and prevent infection. You and your family
should
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues
- Stay away from others if they're sick
- Stay home from work and school if you're sick
- Try not to touch your face
- Put used tissues in the waste basket
- Eat a well-balanced diet

Know your family's medical history. During a flu pandemic, doctors'
offices may be filled and makeshift offices may open. If you have your
information on hand, you can provide the emergency office with all the
necessary information.
-
Find out if you can work from home
-
Find out what your children's schools or your work will do during a
pandemic
- Plan for a loss of income if your work is temporarily shut down
During outbreaks
Once the flu has reached your area, time has run out to try to prevent the flu from attacking your family. At this time, you need to prepare for the potential closings and limits the pandemic will put on the way you do things now.
