Volcanoes

Not everyone lives close to a volcano, but many people visit dormant volcano sites every year. Have you visited Alaska, Hawaii or Oregon recently? If you have, then you're close to a potential hazard.

Plan ahead

While planning ahead is not as easy when you're on vacation, make sure you know how to evacuate and where to go if an explosion occurs. However, if you live close to a volcano,

  • Stay away from active volcano sites
  • Be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice

Act quickly, but don't panic

If a volcano explodes, it's important to stay calm to make sure your family gets to safety.

Lava flow and volcanic ash are two of the most dangerous items associated with volcanoes. Lava flows, which can create fires, destroy everything in their path, but generally move slow enough for people to get out of the way. Volcanic ash can give off acidic gas and can hurt infants, older adults and people with respiratory problems.

In a time of crisis, be sure to follow the evacuation orders given by emergency officials to avoid flying debris, hot gases, lateral blast and lava flow. Also:

  • Close doors, windows, and all ventilation
  • Be aware of mud flows – they can move faster than you can walk or run
  • Avoid river valleys and low-lying areas
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
  • Use goggles and wear eyeglasses instead of contact lenses
  • Hold a damp cloth over your mouth or wear a dust mask
  • Stay away from areas downwind
  • Clear heavy ash from flat or low roofs and rain gutters
  • Avoid a running car or truck engines
  • Avoid driving in heavy ash
