With the app

  1. Download: Customers will receive a text and an email with a link to download the app.
  2. Activate: Customers can activate the app with the phone number they used to enroll in the program.
  3. Invite drivers: The app will ask customers to invite any other drivers listed on their policy.
  4. Enable permissions: The app will ask customers to enable the following permissions, which are required to participate in the program:
    • iOS: Location (Always), Motion & Fitness, Background App Refresh
    • Android: Contacts, Location, Storage
  5. Drive: A trip must be recorded to complete the activation process and ensure that everything is working correctly. The app and permissions must remain active to continue participating.
  6. Earn a discount: Once sufficient data has been collected, the app will display the trending and earned discount. The earned policy discount is based on the average of all individual driver discounts. (Drivers who don't participate earn a 0% discount.)

With connected car

  1. Activate: Customers will receive a text and an email with activation instructions.
  2. Accept terms: To continue to the next step, customers must accept the program terms by clicking on the link in the activation text or email.
  3. Share driving data: Customers need to enable sharing for connected car data. Each auto manufacturer has its own data-sharing process; get information for Toyota.
  4. Get feedback: Customers can get driving feedback and see their trending discount on the SmartRide website.
  5. Earn a discount: The final discount is calculated when sufficient data is collected, and customers will receive an email with the earned discount.

With the device

  3. Plug in device: The device must be installed within 45 days of enrollment and remain plugged into the vehicle.
  4. Get feedback: Customers can get driving feedback and see their trending discount on the SmartRide website.
  5. Earn a discount: The final discount is calculated when sufficient data is collected, and customers will receive an email with the earned discount.

SmartMiles®

With connected car

  1. Activate: Customers will receive a text and an email with activation instructions.

  4. View mileage: Customers can see their mileage in the online portal and receive monthly emails.
  5. Get the monthly premium: Their premium will vary every month based on mileage.

SmartRide program criteria differ in California and North Carolina. Stated discounts are approximations. Discounts do not apply to all coverage elements; actual savings vary by state, coverage selections, rating factors and policy changes. The enrollment discount applies during data collection; the final discount is calculated on driving behavior and could be zero. The final discount applies at the next policy renewal and is subject to change based upon actuarial support at subsequent renewals or with changes in drivers or vehicles on the policy.

The SmartMiles variable premium is based upon the cost per mile established for the coverages in force and the number of days and miles driven when the coverage is in force. SmartMiles’ safe driving behavior discount could be zero and does not apply to all coverage elements; actual savings vary by state, coverage selections, rating factors and policy changes. The safe driving behavior discount applies at the next policy renewal and remains while the vehicle is enrolled in SmartMiles. The estimated premium is subject to change based upon final rated mileage during the mileage period and policy changes. The safe driving behavior discount is not available in California.
