What is pay-per-mile?

SmartMiles offers the same great coverage as a traditional Nationwide auto policy but with a flexible monthly premium that's based on mileage. The premium consists of two parts: a base rate and a mileage rate. A small in-car device measures mileage, and monthly email updates make it easy to see the estimated premium.

SmartMiles $95 total rate; $60 variable rate, 7 cents per mile times miles driven per month; $35 base rate; 500 miles per month
Traditional policy $133; unlimited mileage

Safe driving discount

In addition to a lower monthly premium, customers could get up to 10% off for safe driving. The discount is applied at renewal and is calculated using the following metrics:

Hard braking is considered a slowing in excess of 7.7 mph per second.

Driving between midnight and 5 a.m. increases the chances of an accident.

Driving in stop-and-go traffic is riskier than in steadily flowing traffic.

Top selling tips

1. Ask customers about their annual mileage; if it's 10,000 annual miles or less per vehicle, consider SmartMiles.
2. Inform customers that their rate will flex depending on their monthly mileage.
3. If you’re eligible, consider trying the program for yourself.
4. Remind customers that our road trip exception counts only the first 250 miles in a day.
5. Assure customers that Nationwide is committed to protecting their driving data.

Discounts do not apply to all coverage elements; actual savings vary by state, coverage selections, rating factors and policy changes. Enrollment discount applies during data collection; final discount is calculated on driving behavior and could be zero. Final discount applies at the next policy renewal and is subject to change based upon actuarial support at subsequent renewals or with changes in drivers or vehicles on the policy.
