Burn prevention
Use this guide to help lead a discussion with employees on the importance of preventing burns in the workplace. Help them recognize common burn hazards and adopt safe practices to reduce risk.
1. Identify burn hazards
Recognize sources of burns: Hot surfaces, steam, open flames, chemicals and electrical equipment.
Understand the types of burns: Thermal, chemical, electrical and radiation.
Conduct regular hazard assessments in work areas
2. Use proper PPE
Wear flame-resistant clothing when working near heat or fire.
Use gloves, face shields and aprons when handling hot or corrosive materials.
Ensure PPE is in good condition and fits properly.
3. Follow safe work practices
Never bypass safety guards or procedures.
Use tools and equipment as intended.
Allow hot surfaces and equipment to cool before handling.
4. Maintain a safe environment
Keep flammable materials away from heat sources, ensure all chemicals are labeled and stored correctly.
Label hot surfaces and hazardous areas clearly.
Ensure proper ventilation when working with chemicals or heat-producing tools.
5. Be prepared for emergencies
Know the location of emergency showers, eyewash stations and first aid kits.
Report burns immediately, no matter how minor.
Learn basic burn first aid: cool the burn, cover it and seek medical help if needed.
