Use this guide to help lead a discussion with employees on the importance of preventing cold exposure in the workplace. Empower them with strategies to stay safe and healthy during cold weather conditions.

1. Dress smartly for the cold

  • Wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing for better insulation.
  • Avoid tight clothing that restricts blood circulation.
  • Choose clothing that allows free movement to prevent accidents.
  • Always wear a hat to reduce heat loss from your head.

2. Protect vulnerable areas

  • Use insulated, waterproof boots to keep feet warm and dry.
  • Wear gloves, scarves, and earmuffs to protect hands, face and ears.
  • Use thermal socks and face coverings in extreme cold.

3. Take regular warm-up breaks

  • Limit time spent outdoors during extremely cold weather.
  • Schedule frequent breaks in heated shelters or vehicles.
  • Monitor yourself and coworkers for signs of cold stress, such as shivering, slurred speech or mumbling.

4. Be prepared for cold weather

  • Carry extra socks, gloves, hats and a change of clothes.
  • Stay warm by drinking warm fluids and staying hydrated, eat high-carb foods for extra energy.
  • Create an emergency response plan, include chemical hot packs and a thermometer in your first aid kit.

5. Practice safe work habits

  • Avoid touching cold metal surfaces with bare skin.
  • Stay dry—wet clothing loses insulation and increases risk injury or sickness.
  • Report any signs of frostbite or hypothermia immediately, call 911 if necessary.
