Simplifying life with digital capabilities

Maggie Beck, Underwriting Specialist: We received an application for a 60-year-old applying for a Nationwide VUL Protector II policy with the Extended No-Lapse Guarantee Rider. Labs and exam are required for clients of this age and policy amount, meaning that the client would not be eligible for the fluidless underwriting process.

However, using the digital data we have, I was able to gather enough information from existing lab results, medical history and prescription data to make a quick and favorable underwriting decision of Nontobacco Preferred without having the client complete labs or an exam.

Using innovation to place the case

Human perspective saves the case

Frank Car, Underwriting Specialist: I recently had an application for a 24-year-old male that would have been rated Standard Plus Nontobacco if strictly interpreted using our tobacco guidelines because he admitted to recent usage during his digital interview.

The applicant also indicated that he participates in motorcycle racing of a Pulsar 220cc bike with an average of 15 races per year as an amateur. When I considered the physical strength and endurance required to participate in that activity, combined with his excellent health and family history, there were enough favorable factors to reconsider the initial Standard Plus offer for a more favorable Nontobacco Preferred rating. If he stops participating in motorsports in the future, he may even be able to reapply for Preferred Plus Nontobacco consideration.

Taking on favorable health risks

Watch the video for an example of how Underwriting Consultant Robert Tisdale was able to use a client’s full medical history to offer the case at Preferred Nontobacco, even with a history of breast cancer and blood sugar medication use.

Favorable updates for foreign nationals

Deb Harpel, Underwriting Consultant: I recently received an application for a 44-year-old female applying for a New Heights IUL Accumulator policy with the Long-Term Care (LTC) Rider.

The client was a citizen of India and a green card holder who had been living in the U.S. for 7 years with plans to apply for citizenship. In a questionnaire, the client shared that she travels to India 2 times per year, 1 month at a time. Prior to the recent foreign national updates this case would have been limited to Standard Nontobacco due to these trips to India. However, with our updated guidelines, and because the client medically qualified, I was able to apply the favorable factors of living in the U.S. for 7 years, planning to apply for citizenship and travel to India totaling less than 90 days per year. The client was offered Preferred Plus on the life policy and Preferred on the LTC Rider.
