Doing better for our future

Our journey

Nearly 100 years ago, during a time when everyone paid the same auto insurance rates, a group of farmers from the Ohio Farm Bureau broke down barriers by successfully establishing their own insurance company offering lower rates to farmers that reflected the lower risks of country driving compared with city driving.

They were pioneers in thinking differently and created a way to advance financial sustainability for farmers. Their spirit and philosophy of being a force for good and a force for change influenced everything that makes us who we are as a company — including our values, our mission and how we do business.

Our founders recognized early on that Nationwide had a greater responsibility and could make an even greater impact on society.

Our actions over the years to improve environmental, economic and social conditions for our customers and communities laid the foundation for our current Corporate Sustainability approach and efforts.

Paving the way

Nationwide has demonstrated a holistic approach to sustainability. We invest time and resources into organizations that align with our values and reinforce our mission to protect people, businesses and futures with extraordinary care.

As a privately held insurance and financial services company with a unique set of stakeholders, we take a long-term view on sustainability and choose commitments that make sense for our business. Originating from our company’s founders, our sustainability mindset has come a long way over the years.

Our vision for a sustainable world

We’re committed to taking actions that help achieve social, environmental and economic sustainability for our customers, associates and the communities that we serve. We do this by partnering with organizations that create lasting change, by striving to create a culture in which every voice is heard, by protecting our environment through investments and actions that reduce our environmental impact, and by doing business in a socially responsible and ethical way.

Achieving our vision takes a long-term commitment, but if we all work together to make progress and incorporate sustainable best practices into everything we do, we lay more of the groundwork for future generations.

Your support means a lot, and we hope you continue following our journey.

Our framework

At Nationwide, Corporate Sustainability is an enterprise approach. In 2020, we formalized our efforts to ensure that our commitment to sustainability is supported and driven by all areas of the business.

We established a governance framework for developing our strategic priorities, providing oversight of policies and executing our sustainability practices. It includes Enterprise subject matter experts (SMEs), a Corporate Sustainability Council, the Office of the Chief Executive Officer, and the Board of Directors Governance Committee.

Enterprise SMEs identify and operationalize practices.

The OCEO approves policy positions and sets the strategy.

The Governance Committee oversees our Corporate Sustainability governance.

The corporate Sustainability Council includes members of senior management as well as other key internal stakeholders. The council formalizes our approach into a strategy that aligns sustainability standards to industry and consumer needs, retains talent and strengthens community relations.

We focus our efforts on four key pillars:
