VR may have started as an entertainment medium, but it's increasingly being used for educational purposes like ATV/UTV safety training. VR provides realistic, hands-on experiences in a controlled environment, allowing users to make mistakes without real-world consequences.
Studies comparing traditional classroom instruction with immersive learning highlight a big gap in knowledge retention between the two. Recent academic studies indicates that students retain approximately 75% of what they learn through immersive VR, compared to just five percent for lectures and 10% for reading. And in a University of Maryland study, 40% of participants scored at least 10% higher in memory recall when using immersive VR headsets versus standard desktop displays.
What is the Let's Champion Rider Safety VR Experience?
The Let's Champion Rider Safety VR Experience is an immersive 3D simulation specifically designed to teach riders how to operate ATV/UTVs responsibly. Using Nationwide’s VR headset and controllers, participants experience what it feels like to ride — navigating terrain, making decisions and responding to challenges — with zero physical risk.
The VR Experience guides users step-by-step, teaching proper riding techniques and demonstrating their importance. It also corrects errors and reinforces positive habits, helping riders build a genuine understanding of how to operate ATVs and UTVs safely.
ATV safety tips covered in the simulation include:
- Wearing proper protective gear, including helmets, goggles, gloves and boots
- Understanding age and size-appropriate vehicle operation
- Recognizing and navigating different terrain types safely
- Following speed guidelines and avoiding reckless riding behaviors
- Practicing safe passenger protocols
- Knowing when and how to stop safely
How to request the VR Experience at no cost
Nationwide offers The Let's Champion Rider Safety VR Experience for loan at no charge to eligible partners and educators for instructional sessions, including:
- Farm agency partners
- Farm Bureau partners
- Teachers and school administrators
- Community leaders and event organizers working with youth agricultural programs
At least 30 days prior to your planned event, complete Nationwide's Let's Champion Rider Safety Virtual Reality Experience Interest Form to register your interest and provide details about the event or program.
If your request is approved, a Nationwide representative will follow up with you to finalize details and coordinate delivery of a VR system to your location, including instructions on how to return it when your training is complete.
