One of the most effective ways you can protect yourself while operating heavy equipment is to buckle up. Not only does using seat belts protect against injuries in a serious accident, but they can also help maintain control during sudden movements. If a machine rolls or tips, a seatbelt is designed to keep you within the Rollover Protected Structure (ROPS).
Tips for seat belt safety:
- Inspect: The seat belt and mounting hardware should be inspected before operating the equipment to be sure they are functioning properly.
- Notify supervisors and replace any damaged or worn parts before operating.
- Buckle up: Always wear your seat belt when operating heavy equipment.
- Obtain the proper fit:
- Rest the lap belt across the hips, not the stomach.
- If the seat belt does not fit, request a seat belt extender.
- If equipped, position the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and away from the neck.
- Never operate heavy equipment while standing or leaning out of the cab. Always remain seated and secured.
- Never jump from a moving vehicle. Remain in the seat with your seat belt secured.
