Mark Howard is Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Nationwide. In this role, he leads Nationwide’s legal, government relations, compliance, corporate citizenship, and corporate governance functions. His team focuses on enabling solutions that contribute to achieving company priorities and protecting Nationwide and its members.
Prior to joining Nationwide in April 2016, Mark served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel of USAA. Over his twenty years there, he served in a variety of insurance and financial services legal and compliance functions, as well as four years as the organization’s chief audit executive. Prior to that, he was an attorney with Kirkpatrick & Lockhart in Washington, D.C. (now K&L Gates), as well as on the audit staff of Arthur Andersen in Dallas, Texas
Mark earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Baylor University, and his juris doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees from Southern Methodist University, where he was managing editor of the Southwestern Law Journal. He is licensed as an attorney and a certified public accountant.
Mark is a member of the Ohio Insurance Institute Board of Directors, the National Association of Corporate Directors General Counsel Steering Committee, Treasurer of Columbus Partnership, and the General Counsel 50.
Mark also serves several charitable organizations as a member and Secretary of the United Way Worldwide Board of Trustees and Chair of its Audit Committee; Chair of the Board of Directors of The Buckeye Ranch – an Ohio provider of children’s mental health services; and as a member of the Baylor University Alumni Board of Advocates.
